If you’ve ever looked at a photo of yourself and thought:
“Why do I look so stiff?”
“That doesn’t feel like me at all…”
You’re not alone. So many brides go into their wedding day excited… but carrying this quiet fear:
What if I feel awkward the whole time?
What if my photos look forced instead of real?
And here’s the part no one tells you: Stiff photos usually aren’t about you. They’re about the experience you’re given.
Because when you feel uncomfortable, unsure, or overly posed, your photos will reflect that.
But the good news? There are a few simple things that make a huge difference.
1. Avoid Skipping Your Engagement Session
It might feel like “just another thing on the checklist”, but this is actually one of the biggest factors in whether you feel comfortable on your wedding day. Your engagement session gives you a low-pressure environment, time to get used to being in front of the camera, and a chance to see how I guide you.
So instead of showing up on your wedding day thinking, “I have no idea what I’m doing…” You walk in already knowing what to expect, how it feels, and that you can do this.
It turns the unknown into something familiar, and that alone removes so much of that stiff, awkward feeling.
2. Avoid Standing Still (Movement Changes Everything)
If you’ve ever been told to just “stand there and smile”, you already know how unnatural that feels. That’s because your body isn’t meant to freeze, it’s meant to move. That’s why I always start my couples with something simple, walking, talking and just being together.
This does a few really important things, it takes your focus off the camera, it gives you something natural to do, and it creates real interaction instead of forced poses. Oh, and one of my favorite parts? It gives you a moment to actually soak in “We just got married.”
That’s where the genuine smiles come from. The quiet looks. The laughter. Not from posing, but from presence.
3. Avoid Going In Without a Vision
A lot of brides think: “I’ll just let the photographer handle everything.” And while I absolutely guide you through your day, there’s something powerful about knowing what matters most to you. That’s why I always ask my couples to send over a list of photos they love or moments they don’t want to miss.
This does two things:
1. It gives you a sense of direction and confidence
2. It helps you feel more in control instead of unsure
You’re not guessing what’s happening next. You’re stepping into something you’ve already thought through. And that shift alone helps you relax so much more in front of the camera.
What This Looks Like on Your Wedding Day
Instead of feeling stiff, you feel: comfortable, guided and actually present.
You’re not overthinking every movement. You’re not wondering what to do next. You’re just… in it. And your photos reflect that in the best way.
You Don’t Have to Feel Awkward in Your Wedding Photos
No more stiff posing. No more guessing. No more feeling like you have to perform. You deserve photos that feel like you! Natural, emotional, and full of the moments you actually lived.
